King Hawes-1

Hi Res

I was born in Teaneck, NJ and raised in Bergen County. My parents, Kingdon Hoyt Hawes and Constance Ann, Knowles, Hawes are of English, Irish and German descent. They were born and raised in Westwood, NJ. During my childhood we moved often, eight times in my first eleven years. Towns include Woodcliff Lake, Scotch Plains, Oradell, Montvale and Park Ridge. I graduated from Park Ridge High School in 1956. After high school I attended the "Academy of Aeronautics" (Vaughn College) in Flushing, NY (Queens) and graduated with an Airframe and Powerplant license (A&P). With my A&P ticket in hand I enlisted in the USAF "Aviation Cadet" pilot training program (Class 59A). Three weeks into pilot training I flunked an eye exam. Wanting to fly I started navigator training with class 60-08. One month before graduation I broke a leg and spent several months recuperating. I earned my navigator wings and commission (2/Lt.) on 22 September1960 with class 60-17 at Harlingen AFB.

After serving more than 26 years in the military, I retired in December 1981 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. The background clips and assignments that follow start in 1955 when I was seventeen years old and joined the Naval Reserves.
